I am Dr Mujtaba Husain, a Consultant Liaison Psychiatrist employed by South London and Maudsley NHS Foundation Trust. I am a Clinical Director for Maudsley Private Care, the UK’s first NHS Private Practice Unit in mental health.
I am the lead consultant at the Persistent Physical Symptoms Research and Treatment Unit, a national centre delivering psychological and physical therapy for complex physical symptoms. I led on the service’s transformation from the Chronic Fatigue Unit to a centre treating all persistent physical symptoms.
I am a Consultant in Liaison Psychiatry (the branch of psychiatry that focuses on the mind-body interface) working in medical settings at King’s College Hospital.
I am Clinical Director for Mental Health at the Health Innovation Network, an Academic Health Science Network, which supports the spread and adoption of evidence-based innovations for mental health in South London and nationally.
From 2019 to 2022 I was Associate Medical Director responsible for national and specialist services at the Maudsley, the Trust with the largest body of these services in the UK. These include the National Affective Disorders Unit, the National Psychosis Unit, Eating Disorders, Perinatal Psychiatry, Neuropsychiatry and specialist anxiety, trauma, dissociation and psychosexual health services.
I am a former chair of the national committees for doctors in training at the Royal College of Psychiatrists and the Academy of Medical Royal Colleges. I am also a graduate of the National Medical Director’s Clinical Fellowship program.
I regularly teach on mind-body psychiatry. I have published a number of peer-reviewed academic and educational papers in the field and speak regularly at national conferences.
Medico-Legal practice
I regularly provide expert reports in civil and criminal proceedings and have experience of giving oral evidence in court. I undertake approximately 25 new reports per year. My medico-legal experience is wide ranging and includes mental capacity, fitness to plead and insanity.
I have particular expertise in personal injury and medical negligence cases where both physical and mental health are involved. I also focus on cases where trauma, adversity or abuse is implicated in overlapping and often complex physical and psychological illness.
I regularly advise the Parliamentary and Health Service Ombudsman on complaints and serious incident investigations regarding negligence and liability. These are the most complex complaints which NHS Trusts have failed to resolve locally.
