Dr Gibbons is an experienced consultant in adult psychiatry and adult psychotherapy, working independently as a consultant psychiatrist, psychoanalyst, group analyst, organisational consultant and suicidologist. She has held three senior leadership roles at the Royal College of Psychiatrists. In 2024 she was awarded the President’s Medal by the Royal College of Psychiatrists for significant contributions to policy, public knowledge, education and patient care.
Until February 2020 Dr Gibbons was Head of Therapies (National Therapy Director) for the Priory Group, providing leadership of all therapies across the Priory Healthcare division, covering around 100 hospitals and wellbeing centres. Until September 2018 she worked as a substantive NHS consultant, having spent time both as an inpatient consultant and in the community. Her clinical caseload encompassed all adult mental disorders.
Dr Gibbons has full registration with the General Medical Council and is a Fellow of the Royal College of Psychiatrists. She holds two CCTs (Certificates of Completion of Training) and therefore has two entries on the GMC’s Specialist Register, the first in adult psychotherapy (2006) and the second in adult psychiatry (2009), and has held consultant posts in both specialties. She has trained in a broad range of psychotherapies. She has published widely on suicide, homicide and mourning, and led the development of UK national guidelines for the pastoral care of clinicians following patient suicide or homicide, now incorporated into the Government’s Suicide Prevention Strategy for England.
Dr Gibbons has extensive experience as an expert witness in the medico-legal field over more than 25 years, completing around 250-500 reports per year concerning adults, children and adolescents. She reports on employment, personal injury, sexual abuse, clinical negligence and a range of other matters. She gives evidence in court regularly and has completed well over 1,000 joint reports with other experts.
